IPB University’s TREKFish Technology Utilized by Swimming Crab Fishermen in Multiple Areas

Researchers at IPB University’s Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science have developed an exciting innovation in the Fisheries field: the TREKFish technology, a tool to map out the trail of capture (fish, crabs, lobsters, and more), equipped with the fishER™ software (Fisheries Electronic Reporting). The team of researchers which consist of Prof Indra Jaya, Dr Hawis Madduppa and Muhammad Iqbal, SPi, MSi, observed that the high demand towards swimming crab meat products had caused an increase in the intensity of swimming crab catch. This has caused the population of swimming crabs to be overfished and in critical condition. Other problems which threaten the sustainability of swimming crabs are fishing activities which are damaging to the environment, fishing of small-sized crabs, and the uneven distribution of fishing area. These problems became the background of TREKFish’s creation.
